New member: the Rialto Cyprus Ethnic Festival

is bridging continents and cultures around the Mediterranean
In 2006 the RIALTO Theatre timidly took the first steps to organize a series of events dedicated to diversity and tolerance. The events have included mainly, concerts and bands whose music espouses colorful sounds, cinema screenings and workshops at Heroes Square. The colorful world of the Ethnic Festival was a meeting of shapes and sounds from different countries, starting with tradition and locality developing routes that sometimes intersect and assimilate foreign elements, trends and stimuli, thus creating a kind of world music.
The Rialto Cyprus Ethnic festival organized for the sixth year by the RIALTO Theatre aspires to acquire a place in the international map of similar events as a festival with international interest and particular local mark, focusing on the distinct position of Cyprus as the crossroad and bridge between three continents and cultures. Further than its contribution to the international musical events, the festivals’ renewed trend, will contribute substantially to the presentation of Cyprus as a place with strong musical tradition and a space for dialogue of cultures. The festival presents well known virtuosi musicians established in the international music scene that search, adopt influences and trends, creating performances that surpass boundaries and frontiers of all kinds
The festival takes place every July, including music performances, screenings and workshops at Heroes’ Square in Limassol and various squares in Nicosia with free admission. A Musicological Symposium is also organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture focused both on the theoretical interpositions and its musical happenings from the wider region surrounding Cyprus – the Mediterranean.
